How to attach flash drives or peripherals to the USB extensions, insert floppy drives, CDs, DVDs and the portable USB floppy drives.

 

Note:Patrons must be logged into Library Online in order to use any Public Computer functions.The exception would be sites that do not have Library Online.

 

How to attach flash drives or peripherals to the USB extensions

Public Computers at MCFL are equipped with one or more USB ports.The USB port could be on the front of the computer tower, on the media card reader drive, or it may be located on a USB extension cable on the table in front of you.†† This USB port can operate numerous types of storage drives and external peripherals. †††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††

Tech Support has ensured that all Public Computers have USB ports accessible. Patrons should not attempt to touch the back of the PC Tower.Each USB device has the same interface.

A USB device can only be inserted one way.If you are able to push the device into the port, it is inserted properly.

††††††††††††††† Once a USB drive has been inserted, it will appear as an available drive on the computer.One can use programs like Microsoft Word or Adobe Reader to open a file on their Flash drive.

 

Insert floppy drives

††††††††††††††† To insert a floppy disk into the computer, first examine the front of the PC tower.Does it appear to have a floppy drive installed in the PC tower?If there is a Floppy drive, insert your disk with the metallic circle facing down.Once a floppy disk has been inserted, it will appear as drive letter A: on the computer.One can use programs like Microsoft Word or Adobe Reader to open a file on their floppy disk.

††††††††††††††† If the PC Tower does not have a floppy drive installed, please obtain an External Floppy drive from staff.The external drive will use a USB port.

 

CDs

††††††††††††††† Public computers are equipped with one or more CD drives.Press the small button on the lower right corner of the drive to open the CD tray. Place your CD into the tray label side up.

††††††††††††††† You can now use Windows Media Player of VLC Media Player to hear an audio CD.If your CD has data files, you can open the data files with programs like Microsoft Word or Adobe Reader.

 

DVDís

Public computers are equipped with one or more DVD drives. The drive will have the DVD symbol on its exterior face.Press the small button on the lower right corner of the drive to open the DVD tray. Place your DVD into the tray label side up.

††††††††††††††† You can now use VLC Media Player to watch the DVD. If your DVD has data files, you can open the data files with programs like Microsoft Word or Adobe Reader.

 

Portable USB floppy Drives

 

††††††††††††††† For computers that do not have a floppy drive installed in the tower, we offer external USB floppy drives.The drive can use any USB port.Insert the floppy disk into the drive with the metallic circle facing down toward the eject button of the floppy drive.

††††††††††††††† Once a floppy disk has been inserted, it will appear as drive letter A: on the computer.One can use programs like Microsoft Word or Adobe Reader to open a file on their floppy disk.
